The highest ranking tile is the 'double-six', next the 'double-five', and so on… The double in which both halves are blank (its value is 0) is still higher in ranking than a tile that has two halves of different values, for example: 5 and 6 (its value is 11). Doubles are also higher in rank than other tiles. Doubles are put down in a slightly different way – they are rotated 90 degrees so they can be connected from either end to tiles that match them. Ends (halves) can be connected if they have the same number of dots. The tiles are laid out in such a way as to connect the matching ends. There are 7 tiles called doubles - both halves of the tile are of the same value and the halves of the other 21 tiles have different values on each half. The number of dots on each end varies from 0-6. The value of each tile is the same as the number of dots on it. Each tile has a different value and there no two tiles are alike. On each end there is a number of dots (also called pips). The main components of the game are the tiles (bones) divided into two ends (halves). The goal of every round is to get rid of all your tiles. Several rounds are played to complete the game. The object of the game is to lay the tiles down in such a way as to get 100 points before your opponent. The basic game of dominoes described here is played with the tile set called: 'Double Six'. The game of Mahjong evolved from dominoes. The traditional Chinese dominoes set has 32 tiles. The most popular tile sets (which get their names from the highest ranking tile) are: 'Double Six' (28 tiles), 'Double Nine' (55 tiles), and 'Double Twelve' (91 tiles). It's popularity has now spread all over the world (it is almost impossible to find somebody who has never heard of it).ĭominoes has several variants – a variety of tile sets and rules for different ways of playing. The game came to Europe in the 18th century and was quite popular in the Venetian courts. The game continues until a player reaches the target score, this is typically between 200 and 300 points, depending on the number of players.Dominoes originated in China around the year 1120. Tiles that remain in hand are totaled, rounded up to the nearest multiple of five, and subtracted from a player’s total. If the spinner has two dominoes on its ends, only those dominoes are counted, the spinner itself is ignored like it is any other domino in the chain. There are usually several ends (up to four) to total.ĭoubles count for their total amount of pips. If the open ends are a multiple of five, the player receives that number of points. Tiles added to the layout contribute to a player’s running total. The scoring is usually done while the hand is being played. The goal of All Fives is to have the open ends of the set-up (where players add dominoes) add up to five or some multiple of five. You may play a tile with a 3-X or 5-X accordingly. One spot beside a tile 3-4, in which the 3 is exposed, the other beside tile 5-5. For example, there is two free spots on the layout. Players are required to play tiles which match an available end on the board. If you can’t make a legal move, players must draw tiles from the boneyard until they are able to. Players add dominoes to the open end of the layout if possible. This is domino is called the spinner. Other doubles may not be played like this, only the first. The first double played may be played off of all four sides. The first domino played may be of any value and does NOT need to be a double. Unless the hand was blocked, and no player could make a legal move in the previous round and no player ‘went out,’ then the first player may be determined at random again. Subsequent rounds begin with the player who was the first to go out on the previous hand. The first player may be randomly determined, they will place the first tile. The remaining tiles not drawn from the boneyard or stockpile. These are dominoes that may be drawn when needed. However, the vast majority use the following system: Some sources claim that despite the number of players each player draws five dominoes. Some sources claim that despite the number of players each player receives five dominoes. Tiles are returned to the table and reshuffled. The player who draws the highest value domino starts first.
